Joel Shew (Providence, Saratoga County, 13 november 1816 – Oyster Bay, Long Island, 6 oktober 1855)[1] was een Amerikaans arts, hydrotherapeut en voorstander van de natural hygiene.
Leven
Shew studeerde geneeskunde en werkte intussen bij een daguerreotype-fotograaf in Philadelphia. In 1843 verwierf hij zijn doctorsgraad in de geneeskunde.[2] Hij ging de voedings- en levensstijl volgen die werd voorgesteld door Sylvester Graham.[3] Shew en zijn echtgenote aten vegetarisch,[4] en waren gekant tegen het gebruik van tabak en alcohol.[5]
Shews aandacht werd getrokken door de hydrotherapie, en hij bezocht Gräfenberg om zich bij te scholen over de technieken van Vincenz Prießnitz.[5][6]
In 1844 stichtte Shew zijn eerste waterkuur-instituut in New York City.[5] In mei 1845 opende hij een waterkuur-etablissement in New Lebanon Springs, dat ongeveer $3000 had gekost.[7] Hij was de mede-eigenaar en adviserend geneesheer. David Campbell was er tien jaar lang manager.[7]
In 1850 schreef hij noten en aanvullingen voor de Amerikaanse uitgave van William Lambe’s Water and Vegetable Diet.[8]

In 1845 begon Shew met het blad The Water-Cure Journal. Het aantal abonnees liep na 1850 op tot 50.000.[5] Vanaf 1849 was dr. Russell Trall de hoofdredacteur van het blad. Later kreeg het de naam The Herald of Health.[10][11][12]
